Choosing a student-friendly city in the UK is critical to living your best life and making memorable, life-long experiences. For international students who wish to study in the UK, Leicester is one of the top contenders. Finding a safe, student-friendly neighbourhood can be challenging especially if you are not a local student. But thanks to the world wide web, we’ve compiled a list of the best areas in Leicester for students attending the University of Leicester or De Montfort University.

1. Clarendon Park/ Knighton

Located in the south of Leicester, Clarendon Park is a popular neighbourhood for students and working professionals. Always in demand, Clarendon Park is a quiet but trendy and vibrant area that is only 12 minutes away from the University of Leicester and a short bus ride away from De Montfort University. Queens Road offers a wide range of stores and amenities for university students. Clarendon Park also has many community parks for students to relax and have a picnic!

2. Evington

Evington is an ideal location for students who wish to stay in the outer suburbs but close enough to access the city’s hubbub. University campuses are a short bus or bike ride away. The Spar supermarket is open 24 hours a day and there are plenty of ethnic restaurants and grocery stores for international students. Evington is the more conventional area of Leicester and rent is more affordable compared to Clarendon Park.

3. Aylestone/ Knighton Fields

Aylestone is one of Leicester’s famous boroughs and houses much of the medieval Victorian and contemporary architecture. Not far from the River Soar, Aylestone offers picturesque landscapes and scenic views for students who wish to step away from the lively suburbs. While this means added commute time for university, accommodation in Aylestone is economical with traditional, terraced buildings.

4. Oadby

Oadby is one of the more affluent neighbourhoods of Leicester and a short commute to the University of Leicester. While it is a family-friendly town, Oadby is lodged perfectly between the city and the spectacular countryside of South Leicestershire. The area is conveniently located close to the airport with many easily available amenities, independent stores, and a sports and leisure complex.

5. Bede Park

Bede Park is conveniently located for students attending De Montfort University as it is a short 6-minute walk away. It is home to many purpose-built student accommodations (PBSAs) which are luxuriously designed to make student life easier. Bede Park has several nightclubs and pubs that make for the perfect night out on the town. The area neighbours the serene River Soar and Grand Union Canal that offer stunning waterways, bike paths, and walking areas. Students who are looking for a vibrant student community should opt for Bede Park accommodations.

6. Highfields

Located in the heart of Leicester, Highfields is an affordable location for students living on a budget. Public transit like train stations and bus stops are easily accessible and has many parks, shops and restaurants. Victoria Park and Spinney Hill Park is only 9 to 12 minutes away on foot and the area is quite lively in the evenings. Students who wish to live close to campus in affordable housing must definitely consider Highfields.

7. City Centre

The City Centre is a prime location for students who wish to live amidst the bustling and busy city. City Centre in Leicester is one of the cheapest in the UK and complete with cafes, various restaurants, pubs, and shopping destinations. It is a top choice for students and the abode of many landmark spots and attractions. De Montfort University is only a 12-minute walk from City Centre and the University of Leicester is easily accessible via the well-connected bus routes.

Leicester is a diverse and eclectic city that is ideal for university students. The prestigious universities offer world-class academia and outstanding facilities. If you’re a student looking for student accommodation Leicester, keep an eye out for PBSAs in these areas as they are student-centred and have all your needs covered. Before booking your accommodation, always do thorough research about the property, providers, the total cost of rent, university proximity and the neighbourhood and make informed decisions.
