I am an architect who\u00a0dreamt\u00a0of pursuing a master\u2019s degree from a top international university. The dream was finally turning into\u00a0reality. The moment I received\u00a0my\u00a0Manchester Metropolitan University<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0offer, everything felt new and exciting \u2013 a new country, a new life. But very quickly, reality kicks in. You start asking yourself questions no one has really prepared you to answer-\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where am I going to live? Will I be able to manage everything?\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0exactly what most students struggle with. This is the best time to start asking yourself what the perfect fit for you. Trust\u00a0me\u00a0this one decision can entirely change your lifestyle, growth and will rewrite your\u00a0study abroad\u00a0UK<\/strong>\u00a0chapter.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I started getting deeper into this, I came to know that there are\u00a0different types\u00a0of\u00a0accommodation- student hall<\/strong>, student\u00a0accommodation<\/strong>\u00a0and private accommodation<\/strong>. I became an Architect by day and a researcher by night.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Living Within the Campus Fabric-<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When I started researching, student accommodation was quite intimidating due to its proximity to the campus.\u00a0There\u2019s\u00a0something very seamless about living within or close to the university. The boundaries between academic and personal life\u00a0almost dissolve.\u00a0You\u2019re\u00a0not \u201cgoing\u201d to university\u2013you\u2019re\u00a0already a part of it. From the architect\u2019s point of view, these accommodations are clearly designed for student interaction. Shared kitchens,\u00a0corridors\u00a0and\u00a0common areas\u00a0become informal social spaces. You end up meeting people without planning to;\u00a0while cooking, doing laundry, or just passing by. This is the perfect environment for the introvert to start\u00a0their\u00a0international journey. This setup makes it very easy to meet students from different\u00a0background, courses, countries and learn something new on\u00a0day-to-day basis. You are practically living\u00a0in\u00a0the college campus-reliving your student life again.\u00a0The life everyone\u00a0should experience at least once in their lifetime.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another aspect that stood out to me was the simplicity of living. Utilities,\u00a0internet,\u00a0maintenance,\u00a0everything is integrated into the system. When\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0moving internationally, this kind of clarity makes\u00a0a huge difference. It allows you to focus on settling in rather than managing\u00a0logistics.\u00a0The process\u00a0of securing\u00a0a place in a university hall is straightforward, but timing and awareness are key. If you are late for it, then you might not get your preferred accommodation.\u00a0At the same time, I was aware that such environments\u00a0have\u00a0limited privacy. The same openness that encourages interaction can sometimes feel overwhelming.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experiencing the City Through Private Housing-<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Private accommodation, on the other hand,\u00a0felt like stepping\u00a0outside the university bubble. As I\u00a0researched for\u00a0private accommodation, I came to know that Manchester offers student private accommodation and private accommodation. Interesting,\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0it!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student private accommodation is something between the university halls and\u00a0privat\u00a0\u00a0accommodation. The key difference is that student private accommodation is not managed by the university authorities and can be little far but walkable distances from the university, often not within the campus boundary. These often\u00a0offers\u00a0common study rooms, gathering areas, conduct student friendly events. This differs from accommodation to accommodation. This kind is also sometimes cheaper than student\u00a0halls\u00a0and you get what you book, unlike university halls which solely rely on first come first serve basis for the preferences. The key factor is only students are allowed to live in this accommodation and often\u00a0conducts\u00a0interaction events to\u00a0bring\u00a0all the students together. An accommodation full of students yet offering privacy, this feels like the perfect solution for me.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Private accommodation, on the other hand,\u00a0felt like stepping\u00a0outside the university bubble. You are no longer just a student within a campus ecosystem, but a resident within the city. The scale changes. The surroundings change. Your daily experience becomes less curated and more real. Architecturally, this interested me in\u00a0a different way. Private housing offers more variation; different building typologies,\u00a0neighbourhood\u00a0characters, and spatial qualities. Whether\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a compact apartment or a shared house, the space feels more personal and adaptable.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sense of independence comes with it followed by the responsibilities to manage your own routines,\u00a0rent, bills, maintenance. This makes you aware of how everyday system work and somehow you start getting into the UK\u2019s societal norms! I also\u00a0realised, if smartly chosen-especially closer to university or city\u00a0centre\u00a0then this type will help me stay connected to campus as well as city life.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Navigating the Decision-<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What\u00a0I found challenging\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0understanding the difference between these options but navigating the information around them. There are so many listings, so many variables-location, cost, facilities,\u00a0contracts,\u00a0\u00a0that\u00a0it becomes difficult to make a clear decision, especially when\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0doing it remotely. I\u00a0knocked\u00a0many doors online, enquiring about it to different providers, questioning their authenticity. Finally, I received a reply from\u00a0University Living<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0checking if I need\u00a0student\u00a0accommodation\u00a0Manchester<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0Who knew, this call would make my life much easier. I went through the university website and what helped me was not just the availability of options, but the way everything was structured and comparable. It gave me a clearer sense of what I was looking at,\u00a0something\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0often missing when\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0browsing randomly.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0make the decision for me, but it made the process more grounded and less overwhelming. The best part was one\u00a0website,\u00a0one provider had all these accommodation types to offer.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I eventually understood was, this choice is less about which\u00a0option\u00a0is \u201cbetter\u201d and more about what kind of experience I want to have.\u00a0University accommodation offers a more connected, immersive environment- especially valuable when\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0new.\u00a0Private accommodation offers independence and\u00a0a deeper\u00a0engagement with the city.\u00a0Fortunately, I ended up booking\u00a0Victoria Point,\u00a0Manchester<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0which\u00a0offers a balance of university accommodation and private accommodation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being an architect, I found it fascinating to\u00a0observe\u00a0how different spatial setups directly influence\u00a0behaviours\u00a0\u2013 how proximity and layout influence routines and how context shapes\u00a0belonging.\u00a0And one thing that surprised me was the cost. Manchester always seemed expensive, but looking at the variety of\u00a0affordable student accommodation in Manchester<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0really left me in awe.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lastly<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Accommodation is not just a functional decision.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0experiential. It defines how you start your day, how you meet people, how you navigate the city, and how comfortable you feel in a completely\u00a0new environment. For\u00a0me\u00a0understanding this system in detail with factors like cost,\u00a0location\u00a0and amenities filtered my decision. I finally booked the student private\u00a0accommodation via University Living<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The type of accommodation will always depend on one\u2019s personality, the life one wants to experience. There is no competition-no better or worse, just\u00a0the different\u00a0experiences.\u00a0And one practical thing I would strongly suggest? Start early.
