However, trying to find a place to rent was incredibly stressful and challenging. The process was more complicated than I thought, and it became overwhelming. Was there something important to know before going to a different country? One thing that I’d like to know before travelling abroad is how hard it is to find good student accommodation in Berlin.

My Background

Hi, I am Mahak Chopra. I come from Delhi, India, and I am an international student currently pursuing a degree in International Management in Berlin, from International School of Management. I chose Germany because it has an excellent education system, as well as affordability when it comes to tuition fees here. Prior to coming to Berlin, I had no knowledge of how difficult the actual housing situation would be. Berlin seemed like a good match for me. It’s a diverse, student-friendly place with a lot of opportunity.

The Challenge

When I was looking for student accommodation in Berlin, it became overwhelming very quickly. I was overwhelmed with options and little clarity. There were nice listings with very little or nothing about them. Some were too expensive or booked already. I also tried looking on social media groups, however most of the listings looked out of date or unreliable.

I couldn’t go and see anything being an international student, which added to the risk of it. One night, I sat there with my laptop after having scrolled for hours trying to find a good listing; and I just sat there. Nothing was working and I was honestly starting to wonder whether or not I would ever be able find somewhere to stay before I got there. It was probably my lowest point during the entire process.

Discovering University Living

As I was searching for a university place to stay, I found University Living. Unlike other listings I’d seen before, this site is organized. You are able to filter your options according to budget and area and by what would we think is best for the student. Finally, being able to have more authority when making a decision is very empowering. Can you imagine booking accommodation without having seen it with your own eyes? That’s exactly how I felt when I booked my accommodation.

Experience with University Living

Using the University Living site provided clarity and ease of use. I was able to compare properties, get verification options and know what I was booking exactly to remove confusion and uncertainty. My room was €680/month (including bills) which was reasonable as compared to some other site options in Berlin. Having everything taken care of prior to get there gave me a big relief that I would not have to deal with temporary housing or pick up my luggage at the last minute.

My Accommodation Experience

When I finally reached my accommodation Nazarethkirchstr. 51 Berlin, I felt immediate relief. The room looked exactly like the pictures clean, simple and comfortable. After all the stress during the search, this felt like a big win. The location made things easier. I had access to S-Bahn and U-Bahn nearby, which helped me travel easily across the city. Within a few days, I got familiar with routes connecting to areas like Alexanderplatz and Friedrichstraße. For groceries, I found stores like Lidl and Rewe close by. Even simple things like shopping or using self-checkout machines felt new at first, but I quickly adapted. One thing I didn’t fully expect was the importance of Anmeldung. In Germany, you must register your address within 14 days of moving in. It sounds simple, but getting an appointment and preparing documents can be stressful especially when you’re still settling in.

Why It Helped Me

Having chosen a formalised and validated path was absolutely critical to my success. Rather than confronting ambiguity, I was able to operate with confidence. Rather than feeling anxious about my future, I implemented tactical strategies to support my transition. What do you perceive will be hardest for you about relocating?

Berlin Student Housing Tips

If you’re looking for student accommodation in Berlin, here’s what I found useful:

1 – Start searching early (at least 2–3 months before you arrive)

2 – Only use trusted online platforms to prevent scams

3 – Have a budget (Berlin rentals range from €450 to €800 depending on the area)

4 – Pay attention to public transport links (S-Bahn/U-Bahn)

5 – Be organised with your Anmeldung paperwork in advance

Each of those tips are quite straightforward but could help ease the process of finding student accommodation in Berlin significantly. What do you think would be the most helpful to you?

Conclusion

Locating student housing in Berlin was a lot of pressure to start with, but after using the appropriate process it was easy. Don’t take this step lightly; consider how you want your accommodation experience to be when moving to a new city because it will determine so much about how you live there.

Are you going to be attending school in Berlin soon, or are you already living here? Before you commit to anything, if you’re still trying to find accommodation, let me know your university and budget, and I would be happy to help you out.

Are you having difficulty making the move to a foreign country?
