This guide does that. Below is the breakdown of university entry requirements UK in 2026 sorted by the level of competition, together with what it really means for the cost of living there and where students usually live.

And one last thing before we begin: every band of the grades mentioned below is called typical because every university sets its entry requirements individually, reviews them yearly, and varies requirements from course to course, even in the same department. Think of this guide as your starting point for understanding UCAS results 2026, rather than a fixed set of rules.

How UK Entry Requirements Actually Work

Firstly, an “offer” from the UCAS comprises two elements. These are A-level grades (e.g. AAA) as well as a UCAS Tariff score which is sometimes employed as an alternative. Although these two aspects are interconnected, they are also separate, and the mistake of conflating them can be called one of the most frequent mistakes made on results day.

Secondly, A-level grades represent the actual language in which offers are normally made. A-level offers are usually expressed as grades, such as AAA or BBC, and may also specify particular subject grades, such as an A in Mathematics. The UCAS Tariff points scheme converts all possible qualifications (whether A-levels, BTEC, Scottish Highers, the International Baccalaureate etc.) into one numerical point scale.

Here is the thing that catches out students every August: the offer is not set in stone. The “typical offer” from a university’s publications shows the grades or qualifications it normally expects for a course. It is not a guarantee of admission, and the requirements can vary between courses and admissions cycles. Some universities make contextual offers with reduced grade requirements for eligible students. The eligibility criteria and reduction vary by university and course.

Finally, it should be noted that different courses offered by the same university may be subject to completely different offers. For instance, “A typical AAB university” will ask A*AA for its most challenging course of Engineering and BBB for the Humanities niche course in the same publication.

So, when you see “Manchester: AAB” in a table like the one below, read it as the typical band across most courses at that university, not a single number that applies to everything they teach.

UCAS Tariff Points: A-Level Quick Reference

Here’s the core A-level to Tariff points conversion, which underpins the vast majority of UCAS results 2026 that you’ll see quoted on course pages and in Clearing listings.

A-Level Grade

UCAS Tariff Points

A*

56

A

48

B

40

C

32

D

24

E

16

To calculate your total, add up the points from each individual grade. For instance, three A-levels graded AAA equate to 144 UCAS Tariff points, BBB equates to 120 and ABB equates to 128. But bear in mind that UCAS grade should never be used as a proxy for the required grade if the course does not accept it. UCAS Tariff points may also be useful in comparing other types of qualifications such as BTECs and T Levels.

It’s worth flagging that not every course uses Tariff points at all. In fact, many of the more competitive courses and Russell Group entry requirements are all specified in terms of grades only, thus always make sure to double-check whether the course you have applied to requires Tariff points or grades before making any calculations on the results day. This alone accounts for much of the misunderstanding regarding UCAS results 2026: two students with an equal number of points might get either accepted or rejected, depending on whether Tariff points were used or not.

Grade Combination

Total UCAS Points

AAA*

168

A*AA

152

AAA

144

AAB

136

ABB

128

BBB

120

BBC

112

BCC

104

NOTE: Not sure how your grades translate into UCAS Tariff points?
