Mumbai, the fourth-largest city in the world, is not only a business and trade metropolis but also a knowledge hub. The city is full of colour, vibrancy and people from all over India. It’s the fourth-largest city in the world, with more than 20 million people sprawled across its seven islands. The city attracts working professionals and students from nations around the world. Mumbai has more than 80 universities and research institutes, some of which are known as the best universities in India. Students studying at these universities can seek higher education in various disciplines and according to their interests. The students studying at these universities either stay in a student hostel or in student pg Mumbai.

Here are some of the best universities/ colleges in Mumbai where you can study.

1. Indian Institute of Technology- Bombay (IIT-B)

Established in 1958, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay was the second of its kind but first technology institution which was set up with foreign assistance. The funds from UNESCO came directly from the then Soviet Union to establish IIT-B.

This college is recognised worldwide as a leader in the field of engineering education and research with more than 42,000 students graduating from it in over the past five decades. IIT Bombay is now regarded as one of the top technical universities in the world and therefore attract the very best students from the country for its bachelor’s, masters and doctoral programmes.

2. University of Mumbai(MU)

The University of Mumbai ( formally known earlier as the University of Bombay) is one of the oldest and leading Universities in India. Established in 1857, it is a collegiate public state university located in Mumbai. It is one amongst the first three Universities in India which was established as consequent upon “Wood’s Education Dispatch.”

The University of Mumbai is one of the largest universities in the world with two campuses across Mumbai. It has several hundred affiliated colleges offering both undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses. The students studying at various colleges in Mumbai either stay in a student hostel in Mumbaior in private student housing.

3. Tata Institute of Social Sciences(TISS)

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was founded in the year 1936 by J. R. D. Tata. It is Asia’s oldest institute for professional social work education and has been promoting excellence in education and research through its teaching, research and field action programmes. Today TISS has 4 campuses in Mumbai, Tuljapur, Guwahati and Hyderabad.

It’s one of the most vibrant universities in contemporary India and was named as a ‘Great Place to Study’ by Forbes India, 2018. It offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil. and PhD programmes, as well as Diploma and Certificate programmes to students.

4. Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS)

Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies is a deemed university located in Vile Parle, Mumbai. Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal (SVKM) decided to cater to the rising demand of management institutes in the country and founded this university in 1981. The University has now multiple campuses located in various cities of India such as Shirpur, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Indore and Navi Mumbai.

The university offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses in management, engineering, commerce, pharmacy, and plenty more.

5. SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR)

It is another leading business schools in India offering various courses like Family Management Business, Executive MBA, PGDM and women’s management programs. The institute was named after Sahu Shreyans Prasad Jain of the Sahu Jain family and was inaugurated in 1981 by the then British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.

The institute sits on a 45-acre campus in the western suburbs of Andheri in Mumbai and admits around 700 students under various educational programmes.

Due to the presence of such universities and colleges, Mumbai is considered as the hotspot of knowledge among major cities in India. Students come here to study from various parts of the country and live in student room Mumbai. These rooms are either semi-furnished or fully-furnished with all the amenities for a comfortable living experience.
