STEM is the study of four disciplines: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. This term originated because there’s a lack of qualified workers to fit in high-tech jobs. Since its inception, it’s been attracting students to take STEM courses to address the shortfall.

What are the STEM courses?

The STEM courses are divided into four categories, and each discipline has its own subjects which are listed below:

Science Degree

Science is the field of studying and understanding the natural world based on scientific evidence. The study of Science is broken into three fields. Some of the most common courses under a Bachelor’s degree for Science are:

  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • Physics
  • Microbiology
  • Environmental Science
  • Botany
  • Bioinformatics
  • Geology
  • Ecology
  • Pharmacology

Technology Degree

Technology is viewed as an educational purpose and can be seen as a product of engineering. It is also viewed as a tool practitioners use in mathematics, science and engineering. Science and technology are interrelated since technology is required to apply to science to create devices to solve the world’s problems. Some of the most common courses under a Technology degree are:

  • Information Technology
  • Computer Science
  • Information Science
  • Computer and Information Systems

Engineering Degree

Engineering is one of the top most searched and applied courses by students. It studies understanding how things work worldwide and using this discipline to improve, design, and re-work it. Engineering is an intricate process that involves analyzing and testing developments. Engineering is interrelated to math and science because they are the tools used for the engineering process. Some of the most common courses under a Engineering  degree  are:

  • Chemical engineering
  • Computer engineering
  • Civil engineering
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Electrical engineering

Mathematics Degree

Math is the study of pure math and applied mathematics. It prepares students to analyze data, make quantitative predictions, and solve complex problems. Math is the main core of science and engineering. They are interdependent to produce results. Some of the most common courses under a Mathematics degree  are:

  • Algebra
  • Arithmetic
  • Geometry
  • Calculus
  • Number System
  • Set Theory
  • Trigonometry
  • Permutation and Combination

What are 5 of the fastest growing jobs in STEM?

STEM has paved the way for many people to get a job in many sectors of industries. Jobs in STEM are high paying and require a degree as they are job-solving problems in research, analysis, and design.

Clinical Data Manager: Job Growth Projected: 17.32%

As a clinical data manager, one must qualify for the STEM degree and have vast healthcare and database management knowledge. Their role is to analyze the clinical data, identify the trends and report them. The whole process is designed, and the Clinical Data Manager validates it.

Data Scientist: Job Growth Projected: 17.32%

The role of a data scientist is to understand data and use it to solve problems. A data scientist uses machine learning to forecast outcomes and uncover insights. Tools such as SAS, SQL, R, and Python are incorporated to analyze data.

Human Factors Engineers and Ergonomists: Job Growth Projected: 7.84%

It is the role of studying people’s behavior and working conditions to improve their lives. They need to use applied theory, principles, data, and methods to design and simplify the interaction between humans and other elements of a system.

Industrial Engineering: Job Growth Projected: 7.84%

As an industrial engineer, one has to have knowledge and skills in physical sciences, math, and engineering. The role involves designing, predicting, and evaluating the results. They devise efficient systems incorporating machines, materials, data, and energy to produce products.

Manufacturing Engineer: Job Growth Projected: 4.73%

As a manufacturing engineer, you work with machines and technology by using raw materials and producing an end product. They manage the material flow, inventory, quality control, procurements, and vendors.
