World Students’ Day is celebrated on 15th October each year. This day marks the birth anniversary of India’s Former President; Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam. This day is celebrated to honor the efforts of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam in science, education, and the military. He was nicknamed the “Missile Man of India” for his contributions to developing ballistic missiles and launch vehicle technology. Let’s explore more about World Students’ Day and how it came into formation.  

World Student’s Day History  

World Students’ Day is celebrated annually on October 15th to honor the birth anniversary of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India, renowned aerospace scientist, and dedicated educator. Born in 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Dr. Kalam made significant contributions to India’s space and missile programs, earning him the title “Missile Man of India.” His deep commitment to education and his rapport with students led to the inception of this day to recognize and celebrate the importance of students in society. 

It’s important to note that while October 15th is celebrated as World Students’ Day in India, the United Nations officially recognizes this date as the International Day of Rural Women. The designation of October 15th as World Students’ Day is primarily an initiative within India to honor Dr. Kalam’s legacy. 

World Students’ Day Theme 2025  

World Students’ Day themes focus on encouraging students to become leaders and innovators. It talks about how education can help shape a better future for everyone. As of now, the official theme for World Students’ Day 2025 has not been announced. In 2024, the theme was “Empowering Students to be Agents of Change,” emphasizing the pivotal role students play in driving societal transformation and encouraging them to take active roles in shaping the future. The 2023 theme, “FAIL: First Attempt in Learning,” focused on reframing failure as a learning opportunity and motivating students to persevere towards their goals. 

About Dr APJ Abdul Kalam  

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was the 11th President of India. He was in the office from 2002 to 2007. However, his legacy goes back to the pre-independence era. Mr. Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu. His full name was Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Adbul Kalam. During his tenure, his mission was to transform India into a fully developed country by 2020.   

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Education  

Dr Kalam earned his degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology in 1960. He began his career as an Aeronautical Engineer at Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and later, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). He played a crucial political role during the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998.  

In 2005, he was invited at an event in Switzerland. His visit made his so popular that the event was declared as “Science Day” in India. In 2006, he addressed at the National Award to Teachers, where he said, “Teachers have to realise that they are the builders of the society. A good society can be built when students have the knowledge and are proficient in their subjects.”

Dr Adul Kalam was a very special man. His remarkable contribution to education and country won him many awards.  

  • Bharat Ratna (1997)  
  • Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration (1997)  
  • Padma Vidhushan (1990)  
  • Padha Bhushan (1980)  
  • King Charles-II Medal for Science and Technology (2007)  

Dr Kalam passed away on 27 July, 2015, while he was delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong (IIM).
