News in detail:

In Nottingham, UK, a £40 million specially designed student house complex is planned for an unoccupied car park at Radford, the historic site of the John Player & Sons Castle Tobacco Factory.

This proposed project by Hyson Green Developments Limited includes a seven-story apartment block with 116 student flats providing room for 587 students. Student Lodge will manage it.

Building estimates indicate a cost of over £43 million. Planning documents reveal a developer’s projection of over £2.2 million going towards local structure development.

From the late 1800s, the old John Player tobacco factory held this location, spreading from Alfreton Road to Radford Boulevard. The business transferred production to Lenton in the late 70s, and then the factory was taken down.

Shared facilities, landscaping, eight vehicle places for dropping-off, and over 200 cycle parking points would be part of the new student housing—the project aims to craft a ‘Green Heart’ in the centre of the fully developed complex.

Upon planning approval, the £40 million development will offer specially designed student housing on a historic site that once had a landmark factory and big Nottingham employer. It’s to bring this empty area to life as well as fulfil the demand for student housing.
