What Does a Pre-departure Checklist Look Like?

A pre-departure checklist includes all the basic and essential items required to make your study abroad journey smooth. Every student, or even those going on vacation, must make a checklist and cross-check all the items listed in it. Your pre-departure checklist must include the following items.

  1. Travel Documents
  2. Accommodation Arrangements
  3. Financial Documents/ Arrangements
  4. Health & Insurance
  5. Packing Essentials
  6. Academic & Personal Documents
  7. Emergency Contacts
  8. Communication Setup
  9. Knowledge about Local Culture and Laws

Below we have discussed the entire study abroad checklist. The items listed here will help students understand how they can help them with their academic and personal life abroad.

                  Travel Documents

The first item on the checklist must be your travel documents. Travel documents will allow you to legally study abroad for the entire coursework. Your travel documents for studying abroad will include:

                  • Passport (6 months or above validity)
                  • Valid Study Visa
                  • College Acceptance Letter
                  • Flight Tickets
                  • Travel Insurance

*Note – Each country has its own immigration rules and regulations. Students must enquire with their university about all the travel documents to avoid last-minute trouble.

                  Accommodation Arrangements

Studying abroad is a unique experience for every student. Students can either live inside university halls or private student accommodation. The accommodation checklist must include:

                  • Successfully booking of your accommodation.
                  • Move-in date and transportation facilities.
                  • Nearby places to buy groceries, essential supplies, and public transport.

                  Forex/ Foreign Currency

The next item on your pre-departure checklist is forex or foreign currency. While you are living abroad, for example, in the US or UK there you can only make cash payments using USD or GBP.

                  • Make sure to carry at least USD500 or GBP500 in cash to make cash payments while you are abroad.
                  • Check out the nearest local banks offering the best banking services for students.
                  • Get a debit/ credit card to make cashless payments.

*Note – If you are applying for a credit card, make sure you understand the bank’s interest rate policies and always pay your balance by the due date to avoid incurring additional interest charges.

                  Health & Insurance

Health & insurance are mandatory for every study abroad aspirant. For example, in the UK, every student must possess valid NHS insurance.

                  • Health Insurance
                  • Medical checkup
                  • Carry prescriptions

                  Packing Essentials

Parking essentials are important to ensure you have everything you need upon arrival. These include:

                  • Clothes according to the climate
                  • Electronic devices (cell phone, laptop/ desktop, charger, headsets)
                  • Academic supplies (books, stationary, course material)
                  • Toiletries and personal items
                  • Cultural items (family photos)

                  Marksheets & Personal Documents

Your academic marksheets and personal documents are an essential part of the pre-departure checklist. You must organize them accordingly to ensure a smoother transition.

                  • High School/ College Marksheets and Passing certificates
                  • Transfer Certificate (TC)

                  • Digital copies of all important documents.

                  Emergency Contacts

Students must memorize important contacts in case of emergencies. These can be of local embassy, family and friends, university officials, and emergency services.

                  Communication Setup

Your communication setup is crucial to connect with your loved ones. These must include:

                  • Local SIM card
                  • Important mobile applications (Maps, WhatsApp, SOS apps)

Knowledge about Local Culture and Laws

Before landing at their study destinations, students must have basic knowledge about the local culture and laws.

                  • Learn the basic lifestyle
                  • Listen to their language
