People avoid regular checkups for various reasons. Some people may feel healthy and think they do not need to see a doctor unless they are sick. Others may not have access to quality healthcare or cannot afford to pay for it. Some people may also be afraid of what the doctor might find.

The theme for World Hypertension Day this year is ”Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer.” Hypertension is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease, stroke, renal disease, and dementia. If not appropriately treated, Hypertension can lead to serious health complications. Let us take charge of our blood pressure and our health this year by precisely monitoring it and making efforts to keep it under control.

However, it is essential to get regular checkups to detect potentially life-threatening diseases early, especially as you age. World Hypertension Day is celebrated globally on May 17th to spread awareness. In this blog, we will be discussing significant reasons for celebrating World Hypertension Day, along with some health tips!

What is Hypertension?

High blood pressure, or hypertension, occurs when your systolic blood pressure is 140 mm Hg or higher and your diastolic blood pressure is 90 mm Hg or higher. Prehypertension occurs when your systolic blood pressure is between 120 and 139 mm Hg or your diastolic blood pressure is between 80 and 89 mm Hg.

It is essential to take the necessary steps to control the disease in its early stages. More than 30% of the world’s adult population suffers from Hypertension, which affects over one billion people. By taking control of the disease early on, we can help to improve the quality of life for billions of people around the world.

What is World Hypertension Day?

Hypertension is a severe medical condition that can lead to many health complications. World Hypertension Day is celebrated on May 17th each year to raise awareness. The lack of knowledge about Hypertension is one of the main reasons people cannot identify the underlying causes or detect early warning signs.

The main objective of World Hypertension Day is to promote routine measurement of blood pressure by healthcare professionals and establish high-capacity community screening programs to recognize those at risk for high blood pressure. By increasing awareness and taking steps to control Hypertension, we can all live healthier, longer lives.

What is the Theme of World Hypertension Day 2022?

World Hypertension Day is celebrated every year to spread awareness among the population across the world. This year’s theme is “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer.” The theme encourages people to measure and maintain their blood pressure regularly and correctly and suggests ways to tackle a healthier lifestyle.

What is the Importance of World Hypertension Day?

Hypertension is a severe problem that affects people of all ages and countries. Despite its prevalence, many people are unaware of the risks and dangers associated with Hypertension. This silent killer can lead to heart disease, chronic kidney disease, and other health problems.

World Hypertension Day seeks to raise awareness of this issue and promote healthy lifestyle choices that can help reduce the incidence of Hypertension. Through media coverage, influencer promotion, political participation, and other activities, countries around the globe are working to spread the word about this critical health concern.

How do you lower the risks of Hypertension?

An Active Lifestyle- If you want to keep the disease at bay, it is essential to maintain an active lifestyle. This means dedicating at least 30 minutes or 1 hour to yourself every day. You can do this by exercising, taking a walk, practicing yoga, or dancing Zumba.

Regular Medications- You must take your medication regularly if your doctor has prescribed it to keep your blood pressure under control. Do not stop taking your medicine without first consulting with your doctor.

A Healthy Diet- If you’re looking to improve your health, avoid processed and high-sodium foods. Even though they may taste better than healthier options, processed foods are not suitable for you. Sodium can cause high blood pressure, so it’s essential to cut back on salt in your diet. Eating nutritious food is the best way to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Avoid Smoking and Drinking- It is important to avoid tobacco, smoking, alcohol, and drugs as they can lead to addiction and overuse, which can, in turn, increase blood pressure.

Reducing Obesity- Unhealthy lifestyle choices often cause diseases like obesity. For example, carrying too much weight can strain the heart, making it difficult to pump oxygen and blood properly. This can result in excessive blood pressure and a variety of other issues.
