Part-Time Work Permissions on Australian Student Visa 

Before you begin searching and applying for part time jobs in Australia, it is important to understand the rules and regulations associated with a student visa. On July 1, 2016, the rules for student Visas for Australia were changed. The new rules allow students to work for 48 hours in a fortnight (14 days from Monday). The new rule also states that students cannot start working part-time until their course has started.  

Things to note: 

  • As mentioned above, students are not allowed to start working until their course begins. For example- if your course is to begin in September, and you reached Australia in August, you cannot work until your course begins in September. 
  • If you are a student who falls under the Post Graduate Research Sector, then you have the permission to work for unlimited hours. However, this is allowed when your research or thesis begins.  
  • Moreover, if any student is enrolled in some preliminary course, then the same, 48 hours per fortnight rule applies for part time jobs in Australia for international students.  

Laws governing international students working part-time in Australia 

There are some rights that the Australian law provides international students with, when it comes to working part-time while studying in Australia. Some of them are: 

  • Students have the right to receive a minimum wage as set by the Fair Work Act 2009. 
  • Upon unfair dismissal from the job, students have the right to challenge it.  
  • Students have the right to rest and have breaks between their shifts. 
  • Right to work in a safe and healthy environment.
