Birmingham is the UK’s second-largest city and an exciting place to live and study. It is home to 3 world-class universities, namely The University of Birmingham, Birmingham City University and Aston University. All these universities make this city a thriving student haven. For their first year, most freshers are allocated a place in the university’s hall of residence while the majority of students at Newman and University College Birmingham either live at home or in private student accommodation Birmingham.

So, if this is your time moving-out of uni halls or just trying to find a place to live, there are several areas that are popular with students of all three universities. Let’s check out some good student areas to live in Birmingham!

For students studying at the University of Birmingham

Edgbaston/Selly Oak/ Bournbrook

These three are the most popular student areas in the city for University of Birmingham students. These areas can be called a true ‘student hub’. Lining the streets are characterful terraced houses or spacious Victorian and Edwardian properties that have been turned into flats and purpose-built student accommodations (PBSA).

While living in these areas you’ll never be too far from your friends, given the number of students living in the area making student life exciting. There are plenty of facilities available nearby, from local shops and supermarkets to bars, restaurants and pubs, everything can be accessed quite easily.

The best part of living in these areas is that the rent prices are some of the most affordable in the city, making it ideal for students. Travelling is also quite convenient with amazing transport links along Bristol Road particularly.

Additionally, from Selly Oak station you can reach the city centre in just a few minutes. Another good thing is that the University is only a stroll away for the students living in these areas. Bournbrook is also quite popular with students because it is just a stone’s throw from the Bristol Road which has several pubs, supermarkets, coffee shops and places to eat.

City Centre

The city centre is also a good place to find accommodation for students in Birmingham, although it is not as convenient as the likes of Selly Oak. While living here you’ll have everything at your doorstep, from the big chain restaurants and shops to the buzzing nightlife. The rent of accommodations in this area can be a bit on the higher side due to the prime location and the amenities on offer. However, the comfort of living in the heart of the city could persuade you!

Moseley

Moseley is another very popular student area to live while in Birmingham. It has got a trendy and unique vibe, with lots of excellent independent shops and pubs scattered all around. Despite being slightly farther away from the University of Birmingham, transport links to/from the area are excellent, a 25-minute bus journey will get you to the University and a 30-minute journey for the city centre. The rents of the student accommodation located in this area are affordable and all the important amenities are nearby.

For students studying at Birmingham City University and Aston University

Eastside/Digbeth

These two are excellent areas for students studying at Birmingham City University’s Millennium Point campus and Aston University. Both these areas are close to Birmingham Coach Station and Moor Street Railway Station. While living here students will be less than 10-minutes away from several superb live music venues, delicious eateries and great pubs.

Digbeth is a melting pot of cultures making it one of the city’s most vibrant places to live as a student. The rent is affordable, and the accommodations are well-built and furnished with all the basic amenities.

Birmingham City Centre

The city centre takes another spot on this list as both — Aston and Birmingham City universities have their campuses there. The location is brilliant for students from both universities, with transport links taking you anywhere in the city at a moment’s notice.

It is one of the most vibrant areas in the entire city offering a plethora of bars, cafes, pubs, as well as dining and shopping options. While the rents tend to be on the pricier side, the location, convenience of amenities and quality of student housing available, all make this area a superb place to live.

So these are the best areas to live as a student in Birmingham. If you’re looking for student accommodation in any of these areas then don’t forget to visit University Living.
