What is psychology?

Developmental Psychology, Health Psychology, Neuropsychology, Experimental Psychology and Industrial Psychology.

Major branches of psychology

The subfields of psychology are different from each other, the level of study is complex and teaches one to master each field. They all require one with sound and practical knowledge to be a professional psychologist in the desired field. Thus, it is important to understand the insights of human behavior at different levels. The most interesting branch of psychology is clinical neuropsychology.

The seven schools of psychology are structuralism, functionalism, Gestalt, behaviorism, psychoanalysis, humanism, and cognitivism.

What are the 10 major subfields of psychology?

It is also called as branches of psychology, the ten major subfields of psychology are listed below: 

Development Psychology

It falls under the basic branches of psychology (based on research)and is an important part of psychology. This involves studying human behaviour from womb to birth, adolescent to old age. The development psychologist works for infants, and toddlers having challenges in bonding with parents. They also workwith adults facing challenges related to psychological behaviour. 

The method of qualitative and quantitative changes and stability in the overall mental, physical, emotional, social and overall human behaviour.

Behaviour Psychology

This discipline of psychology is the study of human behaviour and sees how emotions, thoughts, perceptions and behaviour interact with each other. 

It teaches the ways to train the human mind using the therapeutic technique. This includes modelling and shaping patients from negative behaviour and behaviours like depression, addiction, and anxiety and adapt to the new one. 

It is important in the areas of therapy, education and a few other areas. 

Clinical Psychology

It is a branch of psychology studying human behaviour and mental, emotional and psychiatric disorders. 

The clinical psychologist conducts many types of therapy such as behaviour, cognitive and a few others. It is carried out to understand the relationship between the mind and its behaviour. 

They help advise everyday issues afaced by many humans like in rehabilitation centres, mental health centres, community centres, universities, etc. 

Child Psychology

It is especially catered to the study of a child’s behaviour in schools and relationships by learning everything about the child from parental to adolescent age. 

Since this is a basic branch of psychology, the psychologist uses research methods, techniques and tests to understand the growth and development mentally, emotionally, socially and psychologically. 

They counsel at hospitals, rehabilitation centres, education centres, clinics, etc. 

Cognitive Psychology

It is the study of understanding the internal intelligence and cognitive functions of the mind. This includes understanding the attention span, memory, language learning, problem-solving, decision-making, etc of the individual.

This is an applied field (tackles practical problems), so there’s a deep case study, and controlled experimentation carried out by psychologists to get the whole analysis of the patient.

Cognitive Psychologists carry out their work in research centres, mental health hospitals, mental treatment facilities and even as consultants or expert witnesses in the court house. 

Social Psychology

Man is a social animal and can be highly influenced by those around him. The social environment can influence one’s thoughts, emotions, perceptions, traits, etc. Social Psychology is a discipline of psychology that studies the relationship between mental state of mind and social situation, and how a human behaves.

Psychologists study why it affects humans and their behavior. This is done by conducting research, lab or natural experiments, correlational research, etc,. Group study is the subject matter in this field of study.

They work as political strategists, consultants, researchers, clinics, marketing directors, etc. 

Counseling Psychology

The term itself defines a counseling role played by an expert to help individuals 

overcome personal and emotional challenges. This is usually experienced in many areas of life and for all walks of the field, whether it’s at work institutions, communities, homes, etc. 

Counseling Psychologists help them manage and cope with the setting for overall mental health through many approaches, techniques and therapies depending on the level of challenges faced by an individual. 

They assist in places like mental health centres, rehab centres, schools, institutions, workplaces and a few other areas.
