International Student Life at Birmingham City University

My Experience at Birmingham City University as an International Student

The decision to leave India to do my master’s studies in the UK was the biggest step in my life. Although there was much excitement about beginning a new journey, there were also a lot of apprehensions about moving to a new country, a new education system, and a totally new working style. This was the beginning of my international student life at Birmingham City University.

At Birmingham City University, I have studied MA Fashion Design, and my experience here is far beyond the completion of my degree program. Right from designing my collection and utilizing various creative resources to participating in fashion shows, photography, and content generation for the university, my experience at BCU has been very enriching for me. These opportunities shaped my international student life at Birmingham City University.

My First Impression of Birmingham City University

Overall, my initial impressions of the university were extremely positive. Having a background in fashion, I was thrilled at the thought of seeing the fashion faculty, as well as studios and other spaces for creativity.

At the same time, there was a mix of excitement and anxiety since everything seemed new, and I had to get accustomed to how the university works while getting used to living in another country. However, once I got used to the daily schedule, I started feeling much better. Overall, this experience of those first weeks was extremely valuable for developing independence. Finding my routine was an important part of international student life at Birmingham City University.

Studying MA Fashion Design at BCU

One of the key elements of my student life at Birmingham City University is my course where we had three modules that were all linked and helped us to form our collection. My collection is called Denim Arcadia and it is all about curved patchworks of Denim. Development of my initial concept into a finished collection was one of the best experiences for me during the course. Creating Denim Arcadia became a highlight of my international student life at Birmingham City University.

There was one more thing that I really valued; we always had creative freedom, and we were not limited to anything. It was allowed for us to come up with something new, try it out and get some feedback to make it better. We also had tutors who were ready to help and advise us anytime. If there were any issues related to the development of my collection or any particular idea, I always felt comfortable asking tutors for advice. In my opinion, this was the main advantage of this course in Birmingham. That support made international student life at Birmingham City University a valuable learning experience.

Exploring BCU’s Creative Facilities

The facilities at BCU were another highlight of my experience. As fashion students, we had access to a variety of spaces and workshops depending on what we needed for our projects. I used fashion studios, workshops, libraries, and study spaces, as well as photography facilities, embroidery and knitting workshops and CLO 3D.

Having access to these different facilities allowed me to experiment with my designs and develop my ideas in different ways. The university also provided opportunities to attend workshops, exhibitions, and meet designers, which helped me understand more about the creative industry beyond the classroom. These resources added another dimension to international student life at Birmingham City University and my experience of studying in Birmingham.

Collaborating With Students from Different Departments

Another aspect that I liked very much in my student life at BCU in Birmingham was meeting other students outside my course. In various events organized by the university and some projects, I got a chance to meet students from other courses. One of the most memorable moments for me was a professional shoot we organized before the fashion show. We worked together with photography and styling students and made images of our designs. It was nice to see how fashion can be represented through other creative angles.

Working with different creative teams enriched my international student life at Birmingham City University and showed me another side of Birmingham City University student life.

My Experience as a Student Content Creator

In addition to the academic learning process, I also had the chance to get involved in student content creation for BCU. As I was a content creator anyway, I loved this position very much. Working in front of the camera and making videos about various aspects of university life suited me perfectly. I had the chance to collaborate with students from other departments as well, therefore getting the opportunity to meet people who I would not normally see due to my course. Content creation became another memorable part of international student life at Birmingham City University.

The best experience of all was participating in BCU’s 2030 Strategy video. It was an honor for me to be the one who would represent the university in such a video. I had the chance to be featured on BCU’s website and in its catalog photography. Representing BCU in these projects was a proud moment in my international student life at Birmingham City University.

Adjusting to a New Education System and Country

One of the major challenges for me was learning to adapt to the education system and at the same time, adjusting to living in a foreign country. Coming from India, there was a certain method to study and design that I was accustomed to. Here at BCU, I needed to know what was required of me and be more independent.

Creating a collection required sourcing, experimenting, producing, and meeting deadlines. Back home, I knew exactly where to find the fabrics and materials. Here, I learned how to source things in an entirely different environment. Sometimes, it was not easy, but it helped me learn how to manage my time and solve problems on my own. Learning to handle these challenges was part of international student life at Birmingham City University.

Living in Birmingham as a Student

Residing in Birmingham during my time as a student has also contributed significantly to my experience as a whole. The fact that I moved to a new country involved having to juggle day-to-day chores along with being a student. Managing these responsibilities shaped my international student life at Birmingham City University and my everyday student life in Birmingham.

As an international student, securing appropriate student accommodation in Birmingham is among the many things that one should consider before moving. When I was looking for accommodation, I made use of the University Living website, making it easy for me to choose and arrange my move.

It is my opinion that securing accommodation in advance helps reduce stress during this period, particularly when you come from another country with plenty of things to take care of. For anyone looking for student accommodation in UK, planning ahead is an important part of living in Birmingham as a student and preparing for university living.

How BCU Helped Me Grow

BCU has taught me independence as well as how to handle deadlines more efficiently than ever before. Moreover, it has broadened my horizons thanks to having collaborated with people of varying creative minds. This personal growth has been one of the most valuable outcomes of international student life at Birmingham City University.

Most significantly, it has increased my confidence levels regarding my work since I was able to develop my collection, pitch my ideas, and be a part of photoshoots and university contents. There surely were days when things were stressful and when I barely got any sleep at all, but having seen my collection showcased during the fashion show, it all felt worth it. Seeing my work on the catwalk was a rewarding moment in my international student life at Birmingham City University.

My Advice to Future International Students

If you’re thinking of attending BCU, my best advice would be that you allow yourself to adapt. You don’t have to know everything straight away. Use all the facilities available, talk to your tutors, discover the possibilities beyond the curriculum and don’t be afraid to try new things out. And for all those international students who will attend university in Birmingham, bear in mind that it takes time to adapt to the new environment.

The experience at university goes beyond just studying. It’s also about meeting people, taking chances and growing more confident. For international students in Birmingham, giving yourself time to settle in can make international student life at Birmingham City University easier to navigate.

Looking Back at My BCU Experience

Throughout my time at BCU, there have been moments of creativity, independence, difficulties and development as an individual. From creating Denim Arcadia to collaborating with students from different disciplines, participating in a professional photoshoot, becoming a student content creator and eventually showcasing my collection on the catwalk, there were many experiences that will be engraved in my memory for years to come.

In my opinion, BCU was more than a place where I got my Master’s degree. It provided me with creative freedom, the opportunity to represent the university and to develop as a designer.
