My journey as a student is slowly coming to an end. I’m Sutapa Biswas, and looking back at my University of Nottingham student life, I still can’t believe how fast this year has gone by. It feels like just yesterday that I was getting ready to leave India, making sure I had packed everything and wondering what life in a brand-new country would be like.
The UK had always been my dream. Ever since I was a child, I had wanted to come for my master’s degree, so when I finally arrived on 12th September 2025, it felt unreal. It was also overwhelming in a way I had not expected. I came here by myself, not knowing anyone, and suddenly everything was different. The country, the people, the way of learning, the rhythm of daily life.
My first impression of Nottingham was that it was friendly and peaceful, and that feeling stayed with me throughout the year. Adjusting took longer than I thought it would. One of the surprises was the shop opening times. Back in India, I was used to shops staying open until 9 or 10, and even later in the evening. Here I quickly learned that I had to plan things, especially on Sundays, when most places closed by late afternoon. I found that out the hard way.
My first few weeks were therefore an important part of University of Nottingham student life, as I slowly learned how different everyday life in the UK could be.
Why I Chose the University of Nottingham for Business Analytics
I chose Business Analytics because I wanted to work with datasets, not just read about them. I also thought about Bristol and Durham when choosing a university. Their rankings were better in some areas. The course structure at Nottingham caught my eye. The use of N/Lab for data processing and machine learning was a part of that. Nottingham also felt right because it is really a student city with a manageable cost of living and a lot of opportunities.
Choosing the University of Nottingham was therefore an important decision that shaped my University of Nottingham student life.
Studying Business Analytics at the University of Nottingham
Studying here was a new experience because of how different the UK and Indian education systems are. The learning here is more practical and assessment-driven than what I was used to. Over the year, I worked with Python, SQL, machine learning, statistics, data visualisation and a range of techniques.
Machine Learning and Practical Learning
Machine learning and the applied side of the course were the parts I enjoyed the most. Working with data. Seeing how different approaches produce different outputs made the subject click for me in a way that textbooks never did.
I am currently working on my dissertation. It is probably the thing I am most proud of from this year. It has challenged me in ways I did not expect. It has also let me dig into something I find genuinely interesting. Receiving a scholarship for my performance was another good moment.
The practical side of the course became one of the highlights of University of Nottingham student life for me.
University of Nottingham Campus Life
Most of my classes were at Jubilee Campus. University Park was always my favourite. The green space, the lake, the quiet of University Park. I also loved the libraries. Whether I was studying, working on assignments or looking for a place to sit with my laptop, libraries became part of my routine.
Campus became an important part of University of Nottingham student life, especially through my classes, assignments and everyday study routine.
Making Friends During University of Nottingham Student Life
It wasn’t about classes and deadlines when I was here. During the year, I had the chance to meet people from different countries and backgrounds through events organised by the university and my accommodation.
I also made some friends along the way, and, funny enough, some of the people who became important to me were not from my batch. I think, looking back, those friendships are probably what I’ll take the most from.

What Is Student Life Like in Nottingham?
Student life in Nottingham has been comfortable. The city is welcoming. Nottingham is affordable compared to UK cities, and since Nottingham is mainly a student city, everything is set up with students in mind.
I liked how easy it was to get. Most places were within walking distance, and bus connections covered everything. I mostly walked.
Living in a student-friendly city made University of Nottingham student life comfortable and manageable.
Finding Student Living in Nottingham
Before I even arrived, I had to figure out accommodation. I booked through University Living after my counsellor suggested it. Their prices were reasonable, and they helped me compare different options within my budget.
Since I was arranging everything before landing, I had a lot of questions, but they were patient with me, and the process went smoothly.
My Accommodation Experience
I ended up booking an off-campus ensuite at Nottingham Two. Choosing a place to stay from another country is nerve-wracking because you are making a decision without seeing the place in person.
For me, having someone available to answer my doubts and help me compare options made it much easier.
What I liked best about my room was the size, the view and the 24/7 services. It really was me that made my room feel like home. I paid attention to every detail in my room to make it feel like my space and not just a room I was renting.
University Living helped me book before I arrived, and over the months, my accommodation became more than just a place to stay. It became home. Now when I look around my room and think about leaving, I realise how fast everything has gone.

This year has changed me. I have become more confident, better at managing my time and money and more comfortable being on my own. Living independently taught me that I can survive anywhere alone now 😂.
The beginning was hard because I had to manage everything myself while adjusting to a country and keeping up with my studies. Some weeks, that balance felt impossible.
Looking back, University of Nottingham student life taught me much more than what I learned inside the classroom.
The Difficult Side of Studying Abroad
There were times I felt so overwhelmed, so lonely and missing home. I think a lot of international students experience this but we don’t always talk about it.
From the outside, changing countries looks exciting. It is but there are hard days too. I’m most proud that I finished and didn’t give up.
These difficult moments were also a real part of University of Nottingham student life, and they taught me how to manage life independently.
What Comes Next After University?
Now that my time as a student is ending, I feel all kinds of emotions at once. Happy, emotional, a little scared because the future is still not clear.
For now, I am staying in the UK until my student visa ends, and I am looking for a full-time analyst job in data, business or BI.
As my University of Nottingham student life comes to an end, I am excited and nervous about what comes next.
My Advice for Future International Students
If I could give one piece of advice to anyone planning to do this, it would be to plan. Not everything will go as expected. There will be days when it all feels too much. It can also become one of the best years of your life.
My biggest lesson from University of Nottingham student life is that planning helps, but being ready for unexpected experiences matters just as much.

Maybe one day, like me, you will sit in a room that once felt completely new, surrounded by little things that slowly made it feel like home. You’ll pack your bags, look around, and wonder how everything changed so quickly.
