Founded in 1949 as the University College of North Staffordshire to promote interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary scholarship, Keele University was the first new UK university of the 20th century. The university has pioneered the Dual Honours degree, which is still taken by around 70% of students. The university campus is spread across 625-acres of parkland, with large woods, lakes and stunning parkland all featuring. Keele's campus is rural with many 19th-century architectural features including the Keele Hall predating the concrete and red-brick buildings of the modern university and registered by English Heritage as Grade II. There are around 12,000 students from over 120 countries enrolled at the University, and almost all undergraduates can study abroad for a semester in one of 50 partner universities.
All first-year students can apply for accommodation in the five halls of residence on the main campus of the university. These halls include Horwood, Lindsay, Barnes, Holly Cross and The Oaks. These halls have limited beds and are quite old as well. Hawthorns Hall is located off-site in Keele village whereas Barnes, Lindsay, and Horwood are located on the main campus.
