The Russell Group is a member of 24 research-intensive UK universities established in 1994. It is headquartered in Cambridge. Ever since its inception, it has been known to provide quality education and holds a strong history and ethos.

The members of the universities claimed to yield the lion’s share of the UK’s best research, add value worth eighty-seven billion pounds to the economy of the UK, provide over 250,000 jobs to the students, and educate almost 80% of the country’s mathematicians and scientists, half of the linguists, and a considerable amount of engineers.

History and Formation of the Russell Group

The Russell Group started with 17 original members whose name originated from Hotel Russell in London where the members used to have meetings in the beginning. Today, the Russell Group comprises 24 members leading world-class education with a focus on research intensively and providing the best learning experience.

Membership and Criteria

The process of obtaining membership is by invitation and it is limited only to certain universities that meet the criteria of research and academic excellence.

As students, getting admission into any of the Russell Group universities requires a higher grade as it’s one of the top-most entry requirements. This will again vary from courses and universities in the UK. Some of the topmost universities from the Russell Group are Cambridge, Oxford, UCL, and Imperial.

Let’s say, you want to study at the University of Edinburgh, you will require an A*AA-ABB, depending on the course. And, for Cambridge University, you need 3 to 4 A-level subjects.

These are the entry requirements one needs to fulfill while seeking entry into any of the Rusell Group members:

  • English Language Test requirement – such as IELTS or TOEFL
  • Criminal records declaration (DBS/Disclosure Scotland for Scottish Universities)
