Formed by the merger of three existing institutes of technology in the Dublin area -Institute of Technology, Blanchardstown, Institute of Technology, Tallaght, and Dublin Institute of Technology, TU Dublin or Technological University Dublin has been imparting excellence in technical education ever since its formation in the year 2019 but with a history dating back to 1886. This is an institution which is the second-largest third-level institution in Ireland, with an overall student strength of 28,500. Followed by how the three institutions function, it is the eighth university in Ireland, and the fourth in the Dublin Region, following Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, and Dublin City University.

The Grangegorman campus of this university is the flagship campus of TU Dublin located within Dublin. This institution is the only one offering degrees in optometry and ophthalmic dispensing where they have both 4 year Bsc degrees in Optometry and a 3-year BSc in Ophthalmic Dispensing offered by the Universities School of Physics & Clinical & Optometric Sciences. The Physics, optometry and clinical measurement sciences are full fledged degrees accredited by the Institute of Physics.

There are five main campuses of the university, with the Grangegorman, Aungier Street and Bolton Street campuses in Dublin City. The other two campuses are situated in the Dublin suburban areas and both the Blanchardstown and Tallaght campuses in the Dublin suburbs.
