Founded in 1836, the University of London is a central research university located in London, United Kingdom. University College London (UCL) was the first university to be founded under the name “London University” in 1826 as a secular alternative to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Later King's College London was founded as an Anglican college by royal charter in 1829 and also become part of this university. As of April 2020, the university consists of 17 member institutions of higher education and three central academic bodies all of which has around 178,735 students. Thereby making it the largest university by number of students in the United Kingdom. It has a very strong alumni network of around 2 million students consisting of many renowned personalities including including 12 monarchs, 52 presidents or prime ministers, 87 Nobel laureates, 6 Fields Medalists, 4 Turing Award winners, 7 Grammy winners, and the "Father of the Nation" of several countries.
The university owns a considerable amount of land in central London in Bloomsbury, near Russell Square tube station. Many of the university’s colleges have their main building located on the estate. There are many other places which are owned by the university that formed part of the Bedford Estate, including Gordon Square, Tavistock Square, Torrington Square and Woburn Square. Also, there are several properties outside Bloomsbury, with many of the university's colleges and institutes occupying their own estates across London.
